The sweet sound of birds was suddenly interrupted by the sound of nadaswaram (a South Indian long, wooden trumpet used to play melodies in weddings, religious functions etc.) Well, being outside of India, that sound was melodious in its own right as well. The nadaswaram music was wafting from a South Indian Hindu temple, which I spotted as I looked up beyond the cages of the Penang Bird Park. The Arulmigu Karumariamman Temple is a South Indian Hindu temple set beside the Penang Bird Park. Built in 1997, it is noteworthy because it has the largest and tallest (72ft) rajagopuram (main sculpture tower) in Malaysia. The RM2.3 million temple is dedicated to the Hindu deity Arulmigu Karumariamman. (Butterworth, Penang, Nov. 2013)
