The history of the Old Kuči starts with a [[Gojko Mrnjavčević]], the brother of [[Serbian King]] [[Vukašin Mrnjavčević]] and Despot [[Jovan Uglješa]], who, after the [[Battle of Maritsa]] against the Turks in 1371 (his brothers died at the battle), fled with his family and settled in the Kuči mountains to avoid persecution by the Turks.
