Mero Baze belongs to the first generation of journalists of pluralism in Albania, which started after 1990. He has completed his studies in the University of Tirana. During his time as a student, he has been part of the team of “Studenti” newspaper. Until 1992, he has been working as a journalist and cooperating with the first newspapers of the free pluralistic press.

In May of 1992 he becomes the General New Director in ATSH (Albanian Telegraphic Agency) where he worked until December of 1993. His efforts to try to bring new reforms to ATSH and increase its credibility as a public news agency resulted unsuccessful so he was obliged to leave.

In January 1993 he was elected the Chief of the League of the Journalists of Albania and he continued holding this position until 1994 when the government approved a law about the press. Baze criticized this law publicly and resigned from the Albanian Journalist League in response to being against this law.

At the end of 1993 he started working as an editorialist in the newspaper “Rilindja”, which was a newspaper of Kosovo that was published in Tirana. At the beginning of 1995 he started working as a reporter of the American radio “Voice of America” in Tirana. Some of his reports left footprints in the history of press at that time. The interview with the ex leader of the Socialist Party, Fatos Nano, and the live reports about the situation in Vlora during 1997 have been really popular.

In July 1997 he left the “Voice of America” because since April, he had created a private news Agency called “Enter”. The agency became very successful because of the events of 1997. This agency had its own website and service in English. During that time, Baze published his book “Albanian American Realities”, that showed, throughout facts , the delicate relationships of the government of Sali Berisha (who was a president at that time) with the American administration. The increasing of the tension between the two worsted the situation in Albania and the fall of Sali Berisha and his government.

In January 1999 he started working as a journalist for the radio “Free Europe” from Tirana, mostly about matters of Kosovo. He want to the conference of Rambuje and it was the only Albanian journalist reporting from there. At that time, he published another book about the impact of Albania in the Kosovo War called “Albania and the War in Kosovo”. After that, another book came that was called “Rambuje and the disagreements about peace”.

In July 1999 he started the newspaper “Tema” (www.tema.al). At the beginning, the newspaper was a weekly one, and in September 2000 it started daily. Today, it has become one of the most important and influential newspapers in Tirana. After 2005, even though Baze was known about his opposing viewpoints with the socialists he started criticizing the government of the prime minister, Sali Berisha. After the Gerdeci Tragedy on march 15, 2008, where 26 people lost their lives, Baze, once again, became the voice of the Albanian press against the government. In march 2008, he published another book called “Confronting the Anti-Opposing factor”, that was a true and detailed analyze of the culture of anti-opposing politics in Albania, during 1997-2002.

Because of his criticism against the government of Berisha, his newspaper and the press manufacture have been closed from the police forces in January 2009 and his staff can no longer work there. The government has also been silent about the blowing up of the car of the journalist, Mero Baze, in front of his own house, at the end of December of last year. The international Media and organizations that defend journalists rights have reacted immediately, commenting it as an effort on the part of the government to intimidate and scare the journalists that criticize it.

In September 2008 he started a daily program in “Vizion Plus” television station, called “Factor Plus”. This program is very popular and deals with political events, investigating the problems of corruption and is also a open debate about the economical developments. The program airs from Monday through Thursday and has very good ratings.
