Kalpaks ka lindur nё njё familje tё femerёve. Pasi vendosi qё tё bёhet njё ushtar ai ka mbaruar shkollen ushtarake [[Irkutsk]]. Ai e ka shfaqur talentin e tij si komandant dhe heroizmin e tij gjatё Luftёs sё parё botёrore dhe pastaj morri dekoraten si ushtari mё i rёndёsishёm rus dhe u bё komandanti regjiment ne vitin 1917.
Pas shpalljes sё pavarёsisё sё [[Letonia|Letonisё]] nё nёntor tё vitit 1918, Kalpaks u regjistrua ne ministrinё e mbrojtjes. Ai organizoi mbrojtjen e [[Vidzeme|Vizdzeme-sё]] kundёr sulmit tё [[Bolshevizmit]. Me 31 dhjetor Kalpaks u bё Kryekomandant I tё gjitha njёsive tё armatosura qё ishin nё dispozicion tё Qeverisё Provinciale tё Letonisё.
Nёn udhёheqjen e tij, forcat e para tё armatosura tё Letonisё u bёn tё aftё nё beteja. Mё 28 shkurt tё vitit 1919, Kalpaks u dekorua me gradёn e kolonelit. Nga janari deri nё mars tё vitit 1919 batalioni i parё i Letonisё luftoi me trupat rezervё tё [[Gjermania|Gjermanisё]] VI luftuan qё tё largojnё bastisjet Bolshevike nё [[Kurzeme]] dhe ky ishtё fillimi i luftёs pёr pavarёsi tё Letonisё. Me 6 mars tё vitit 1919 afёr Airītes, Kalpaks u vra nё njё betejё me trupat e [[German Freikorps]].
Pas vdekjes sё tij, Kalpaks u dekorua me dekoratёn mё ta lartё per ushtar Letonez pas vdekjes, me Order of Lāčplēsis.
