U krijua rreth gjysmës së dytë të [[Shekulli XV|shek. XV]]. Shpikja e saj i atribuohet italianëve A. Brensino, Gasparo da Salo dhe A. Amati. Vivaldi dhe [[Paganini]] e ngritën artin e violinës në shkallën më të lartë. Ata u pasuan nga mjeshtër të tjerë si [[Hajden]], Beethoven, [[Bartok]], etj. Të njohur janë veçanërisht koncertet për violinë të Mozartit, [[Stravinski]]t, [[Shonberg]]ut, etj.
