Himni evropian bazohet në poemёn "[[Ode gëzimit]]", pjesa 4 e simfonisë së 9 tё Ludwig van Beethoven. Zyrtarisht përdoret vetëm versioni instrumental pa tekst. Himni u pёrcktua më 19 janar 1972 nga Këshilli i Evropës, i pёrgatitur nga dirigjenti Herbert von Karajan. Dita e Evropës tradicionalisht festohet më 9 maj të çdo viti. Megjithatë fillimisht 5 maji ishte caktuar nga ana e Këshillit të Evropës për tu festuar si Dita e Evropës dhe atë qzsh në vitin 1964.
