Teorema u formula për herë të parë nga [[Pierre de Fermat]] në vitin 1637 dhe në një kopje të librit ''[[Arithmetica]]'' pretendonte se e kishte edhe vërtetimin e teoremës por nuk kishte vënd ku ta shkruante. Asnjë vërtetim nuk u arrit deri në vitin 1995, pavarësisht përpjekjeve të vazhdueshme të matematikanëve për 358 vite rradhazi.
