Dita e Evropës tradicionalisht festohet më 9 maj të çdo viti. Megjithatë fillimisht 5 maji ishte caktuar nga ana e Këshillit të Evropës për tu festuar si Dita e Evropës dhe atë qzsh në vitin 1964. Më vonë, Bashkimi Europian filloi të festonte Ditën e vet evropiane më 9 maj në përkujtim të Deklaratës Schumanit të vitit 1950, dhe duke iu referuar asaj si "Dita e Schumanit".<ref>[http://www.delukr.ec.europa.eu/page6860.html Does the EU have a "National" Day?] {{
The proposal to officially adopt it as the flag of the EU was made in the [[Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe]] (2004) which however failed to be ratified. Instead, the [[Treaty of Lisbon]] (2007) includes an annex signed by sixteen members which declares that the European flag, anthem, motto, currency, and Europe Day "will for them continue as symbols to express the sense of community of the people in the European Union and their allegiance to it."</ref>
