Kuptimi i termit vazhdon të debatohet dhe disa e çmojnë atë si problematik. Disa studiues e konsiderojnë Islamofobinë si një formë të ksenofobisë ose [[Racizmi|racizmit]], megjithëse legjitimiteti i këtij përkufizimi është i diskutueshëm. Disa studiues e shohin Islamofobinë dhe racizmin si fenomene pjesërisht të mbivendosura, ndërsa të tjerët e kontestojnë marrëdhënien, kryesisht me arsyetimin se feja nuk është racë. Shkaqet dhe karakteristikat e Islamofobisë janë gjithashtu tema të debatit.
