Ato u mbajtën për nder të [[Zeusi|Zeusit]], e ku grekët u dhanë atyre një origjinë [[Mitologjia Greke|mitologjike]] . Lojërat (olimpiadat) mbaheshin çdo katër vjet, duke u bërë një njësi e kohës në kronologjitë historike.
