Gratë në shkencë është një nocion që përfshin prezencën e grave në shkencë duke filluar që nga periudhat më të hershme të historisë së shkencës ku ato kanë dhënë kontribute të konsiderueshme. Historianët me interes në këtë fushë kanë hulumtuar përpjekjet dhe arritjet shkencore të grave, pengesat me të cilat ato janë përballur dhe strategjitë e zbatuara për ta shqyrtuar dhe pranuar kontributin e tyre në revista të mëdha shkencore dhe botime të tjera. Studimi historik, kritik dhe sociologjik i këtyre çështjeve tani është bërë një disiplinë akademike e pavarur. [1] [2] [3] [4]

Përfshirja e grave në fushën e mjekësisë ka ndodhur në disa civilizime të hershme dhe studimi i filozofisë natyroreGreqinë e lashtë ishte i hapur edhe për gratë. Gratë kontribuan në protoshkencën e alkimisë në shekujt e parë ose të dytë pas Krishtit. Gjatë Mesjetës, kuvendet fetare ishin një vend i rëndësishëm i arsimit dhe edukimit e ku disa nga këto komunitete kishin krijuar mundësi edhe për përfshirjen e vajzave dhe grave në mënyrë që edhe ato të mund të kontribuojnë në kërkimet shkencore. Shekulli XI paraqet kohën kur shfaqën universitetet e para e ku gratë ishin, për pjesën më të madhe, të përjashtuara nga arsimi universitar. [5] Jashtë rretheve arsimore dhe akademike, botanika ishte shkenca që përfitoi më shumë nga kontributet e grave, si në kohën e hershme mesjetare ashtu edhe në kohën moderne. [6] Qëndrimi ndaj arsimimit dhe edukimit të grave në fushat mjekësore duket se ka qenë më liberal në Itali sesa në vendet e tjera. Gruaja e parë e njohur që fitoi një katedër universitare në një fushë shkencore studimesh ishte shkencëtarja italiane e shekullit të tetëmbëdhjetë Laura Bassi.

Rolet gjinore ishin kryesisht përcaktuese në shekullin XVIII kur gratë bënë përparime thelbësore në shkencë. Gjatë shekullit XIX, gratë u përjashtuan nga arsimi më zyrtar shkencor, por ato filluan të pranoheshin në shoqëritë mësimore gjatë kësaj periudhe. Aty kah fundi i shekullit XIX, emancipimi i vazhdueshëm i grave ndikoi në paraqitjen e kolegjeve të grave të cilat mundësuan ngritjen edhe të nivelit arsimor, kulturor dhe shkencor të grave.

E lindur në Varshavë, Poloni, Marie Curie, ishte ajo e cila u hapi rrugën shkencëtarëve për të studiuar radioaktivitetin duke zbuluar elementët radium dhe polonium. [7] Me kontributin e saj si fizikane dhe kimiste, ajo kreu kërkime fillestare mbi prishjen radioaktive dhe ishte gruaja e parë që mori një çmim Nobel në Fizikë duke u bërë personi i parë që mori një çmim të dytë Nobel në Kimi. Dyzet gra janë vlerësuar me Çmimin Nobel midis viteve 1901 dhe 2010. Shtatëmbëdhjetë gra janë vlerësuar me Çmimin Nobel në fizikë, kimi, fiziologji ose mjekësi. [8] Marie bashkëpunoi me burrin e saj, Pierre Curie, një fizikan francez që kontribuoi në punën e kristalografisë, magnetizmit dhe radioaktivitetit. Curie dihej gjithashtu se ishte në bashkëpunim edhe me Henri Becquerel, një tjetër fizikan fitues i Çmimit Nobel që përcaktoi një metodë të matjes së radioaktivitetit duke përdorur Becquerel.
